Wolf Sable Pomeranian

A true wolf sable pomeranian coat should be composed of a grey undercoat and guard hairs being part grey and part grey with black tips (sabling), which is what gives them their characteristic black and grey banding.

With wolf sable pomeranians, there are two “theories” on what is considered a true wolf sable.

Wolf Sable Pomeranian

Kennel clubs will register a dog based on it’s visual color, they do not require any DNA testing. Therefore, some breeders do not DNA test and will go by the dog’s color.

This causes a lot of puppies to be misrepresented and registered as wolf sable when they are actually a red or cream sable. As puppies, they can look wolf sable because the sabling gives them a darker color but the coat lightens into the creme or red shade as the puppy grows.

Black and Tan Pomeranian

Most breeders, including myself, rely on DNA testing before claiming a puppy is wolf sable.

The “wild” allele (aw) of the Agouti gene is what you’re looking for when breeding this color. Whether the Agouti gene expresses physically on the dog (phenotype), depends on a couple other genes.

See below for the different combinations you need when DNA testing potential parents, in order to determine if they can produce wolf sable puppies.

Breeding for Wolf Sable puppies

Here are the different allele combinations needed in order to produce a puppy that is visually (phenotype) wolf sable :

MC1R : E/e or E/E (allows expression of dark/black pigment)

Brown : B/B or B/b (no dilution of the black pigment to brown.

Dilute : D/D or D/d (no dilution of the coat color to blue, lavender, etc.)

Dominant Black : N/N (allows expression of the agouti gene)

Agouti : aw/at or aw/a or aw/aw

ADDITIONAL NOTES :

A dog that is ay/ay or ay/aw or ay/at or ay/a will appear cream sable.

A dog that is aw/aw or aw/at or aw/a will appear wolf sable.

A dog that is at/at or at/a will appear black and tan.

A dog that is a/a will appear black.
