GUARDIAN HOMES

Placing puppies in guardian homes is an idea I came up with when I realized my dogs would be happier with a family who makes them the center of their attention. With the number of dogs I would have at home, that just would not be possible. It also allows the dog to create a bond early on with the family that will eventually become the dog’s permanent family.

I try my best to place my breeding dogs in homes where they are the only dog or a 2nd dog, which I even prefer so that the dog has a pet companion with him while his family is out of the house. Maintaining good relations with the guardian home is very important as the agreement lasts a couple years. The contracts below outline the agreement very well so I suggest having a read at them before getting in touch to see if it’s something that could interest you.

Low Cost

Becoming  a guardian home for one of our puppies or adults allows you to acquire a dog at a lower cost than if you were buying outright.

When you are taking in a dog as a guardian, the dog in question is one that I have decided to keep back to breed as I believe they will turn out to be breeding/show quality, so you’re getting a great quality example of the breed as a companion !

All you pay for is regular vet care, such as vaccinations and dewormer, regular checkups, food, bedding, toys, etc., sterilization and a teeth cleaning when the time comes, which are all costs you would incur when buying a dog anyway. Any pregnancy related costs are not your responsibility. See the contracts below for more details.

Conditions

The new guardian takes their dog home as soon as they are ready, without payment but ownership is not transferred until the dog is done breeding and has been spayed or neutered along with a teeth cleaning, if needed.

If at any point during the agreement, the family changes its mind and no longer wants the dog, I simply take the dog back and there are no other obligations to fulfill.

If at any point the guardian needs to have the dog boarded such as in the event of vacations, going away on business, etc., the dog is always free to stay with us at no charge during the guardian home agreement but regular low fee boarding will apply once the guardian agreement is over and ownership has been transferred.

Shared Custody

A guardian home will need to live preferably within an hour’s driving distance from our location to facilitate traveling the dog, which is the guardian family’s responsibility though for a female this can be a little more flexible.

A female dog is with us 5 months a year and with it’s guardian 7 months a year, depending on her heat cycles. She is brought to us during 1 week for breeding and comes back 8 weeks later (1 week prior to whelping) for another 9 weeks to have and raise her puppies.

This is done twice in a year, based on a female usually going into heat every 6 months.

The agreement for becoming a guardian home for a male is a little different and most of the maintenance fees mentioned above are covered (food and vet care). The best way to get all the details, for either males or females, is by reading the contracts below which stipulate the terms and agreements applicable.
