Unfortunately pomeranians are prone to whelping complications which often lead to emergency C-sections. Scheduled C-sections are much cheaper (1 500$) but they always seem to be needed at 3 am or on a Saturday. Once in my 8 years of breeding have I had a scheduled C-section. Another thing to consider with C sections is that puppies and even mom do not always make it.

Dogs are kept in Clearly Loved Pets playpens when we are not home for safety purposes but also to avoid any accidental and especially non supervised breedings which can be dangerous. Quality whelping boxes are also an important expense included here. We always try to have 2 on hand on top of the regular playpens that eventually house puppies as they outgrow their whelping box.

We use the wonderful Vcheck V200 Bionote machine for progesterone testing on our girls to save on costs. The machine certainly isn't cheap but definitely pays for itself in the long run.

This is probably the highest one-time expense of them all. As mentioned this one can vary anywhere from 5 000$ to 15 000$ PER parent. This also includes all importation fees associated with having the dog traveled to Canada as we import quite a bit to achieve the quality we produce.

These are indispensable items in saving some puppies who are struggling, especially premature puppies. They ensure constant oxygen supply and allow for humidity control as well to help avoid dehydration in puppies and temperature control to help them regulate their body temperature as they can't do this on their own until they are about 2 weeks old.

All our boys are DNA tested for color as we offer stud services on them and it's important to know which genes can be passed on to their puppies, especially when the merle gene is present as this can be 'hidden' visually on a dog but present genetically. All our wolf sables are testing as well but this expense is covered above in the Recurrent Expenses.

Showing our breeding dogs to championship is important in ensuring that they are conform to the breed standard. Hiring a handler to show them is convenient but definitely more costly.

Last but definitely not least, breeders spend countless hours from the time it takes to breed the dogs, to whelping, to raising those puppies, to sending weekly updates to each new family, to the countless vet trips, to the hours upon hours of missed sleep to keep an eye on newborns, struggling puppies, waking up every two hours for feedings, etc. The list goes on and if you attempt to calculate, based off all the costs listed on this page, how much money a litter brings in, if any at all, you can divide that by the god knows how many hours we spend on each and every litter and count that as a most likely below minimum wage salary if a breeder making any money off a litter offends you. I have never calculated this "salary" and never want to because I don't need to as I love being a breeder, it is a passion above all.
